5 types of pain one should not ignore
The body has its own way of communicating issues, and pain serves as a powerful signal that something is wrong. So, some types of pain should not be ignored, and they warrant immediate medical attention. Further, recognizing distinctive characteristics of discomfort can help one seek timely treatment. Here is a look at various types of pain that warrant immediate treatment and the importance of early intervention in preventing further complications.
Leg pain with swelling
Leg pain accompanied by swelling should never be ignored, as it could be a sign of a condition called deep vein thrombosis. The condition develops due to the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg. If untreated, the clot may dislodge and travel to the lungs. The symptoms of this condition include swelling, pain, and warmth, especially when walking. This usually develops when one does not move the legs enough. Sitting for too long, say while traveling or being bedridden for days, and giving birth are all risk factors for DVT. If leg pain does not subside, one should consult a doctor.
Severe headache
If one experiences a sudden yet severe headache that seems to be different than usual aches, then it should not be overlooked. While migraines and tension headaches are common, certain aches may indicate a serious condition. If the headache is accompanied by vomiting, nausea, visual disturbances, confusion, stiff neck, or difficulty speaking, it could be a symptom of blood clots, stroke, meningitis, brain tumor, or a brain hemorrhage. At times, migraine may develop due to a ruptured blood vessel from a weak spot that causes bleeding in the brain. If the headache does not have an apparent cause or if throbbing pain persists or recurs frequently, one should consult a physician immediately or call 911.
Testicular pain
Testicles are among the most sensitive parts of the body, so pain in the region should not be ignored, especially when accompanied by swelling. The intensity can range from a dull ache to a sharp pain that makes it difficult to walk. It can develop due to an infection causing gradual pain, trauma, or a condition called testicular torsion—where the blood flow is cut off to the organ, making it twist. Even slight pain in the testicles should be immediately examined to avoid worsening the condition.
Pain while urinating
Urination should not be painful. If it is, it may indicate underlying health concerns like urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder stones, kidney stones, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If the pain persists or is accompanied by fever, blood in urine, or back pain, one should seek medical assistance.
Chest pain
Chest pain can be triggered by temporary issues like indigestion or muscle strain. But if dealing with sharp and persistent aches without any major lifestyle changes, pain traveling down to the arm, and breathing issues or dizziness, one should consult a doctor immediately. Such pain could be a sign of a heart attack or angina.
